Built on the Rock: 2009-2010 Theme
Greetings in Christ! I hope this post finds you and yours well! The summer has flown by and it is again time for another year of school at Zion Lutheran. This year will mark Zion’s 79th year of Christian education, and for this year we have selected a special theme: “Built on the Rock.” The rock, of course, refers to Christ, and upon His death and resurrection do we build our faith. And it is our faith that guides us in our earthly lives and sets us apart from nonbelievers. Consider the following verses:
Matthew 7:24-27 [Jesus said] “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rains came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Can you imagine building your home in a place that was not on a secure foundation? I don’t think any of us would live in such a home, but sadly it is our spiritual homes that are often neglected and many people wander through life not knowing the danger they are in. When hardships and trials enter their life, they have no secure faith to keep them through the difficult times. The tribulations are like the storms and rising waters and when they recede nothing will be left but bitterness, despair, and resentment. Thankfully, this need not be case for us Christians! Christ died and rose for us and his victory has given us a safe haven from life’s problems (which we all encounter in one form or another). Consider this verse as well:
Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
At Zion Lutheran we are actively working to build each child’s faith on the solid rock of Christ’s Word. It takes but one reading of the daily news to know that the world we live in is a dangerous place full of pitfalls, temptations, and corruption. We want our children and students to leave Zion with a peace and security that can only come from regular instruction in the Word. Our school is a special place – it is not just another alternative to public education, our students are receiving an education that can – with God’s blessing – last them a lifetime and help them to withstand the assaults of the devil, the world, and our own sinful nature.
